Fiona Ross

Fiona is a multi-media artist, based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne where she creates acrylic and pastel land and seascape paintings. She also works with glass and creates colourful textiles using traditional methods.

Her textile work includes tapestries, proggy rugs, cushions and wall hangings. She also teaches the techniques to others.

Fiona developed her interest in proggy work - also known as rag-rugging - while working at Beamish Museum. This provided an opportunity to study the local history and tradition of it, and she particularly enjoyed learning the technique of piecing together colours to produce a work of art.

She explains how the growing interest in recycling and reusing fabrics, is making this accessible craft grow in popularity again. This year Fiona will be running rag rugging workshops from her base at The Biscuit Factory Studios in Newcastle.
