Kevin Nicholls

Kevin is a retired art teacher, originally from Cornwall, but now working from his studio at Longhorsley in Northumberland.

He started out teaching ceramics in schools, but various departmental changes required him to introduce a wider range of art, including drawing, painting and print making - techniques he uses in his own work today.

Inspired by the wild land and seascapes of his native Cornwall and Northumberland, he tries to focus on the atmosphere and emotional impact of a place rather than any specific detail. Kevin's most recent works are water-based oils often with an underpainting in acrylic. He begins each piece with a mixture of photos, sketchbook work and colour studies.

"Depending on the weather, I love working outside, even if the final painting is completed in my studio," he says. "This approach often means that my paintings evolve and have a life of their own".
