Karen Thomas

Karen is a painter and printmaker, based in the Scottish Borders. Her work is often inspired by place, but sometimes an image, object
or even a moment in time can spark her imagination. Fragments of images, text, music or conversation often provide the starting point for a study in colour, line, form and texture, which then develops into a deeper exploration.

Karen's love of colour, pattern and repetition inevitably surface in her work, whether in landscape, still life or abstract.
"I'm influenced by a wide range of artists, but this current body of work owes most to artists of the Bauhaus, including Klee, who in turn influenced the artists of St Ives and mid-century modern designers.

"As a printmaker I have recently become very interested in gel plate printing which lends itself to geometric design. My gel prints are often the stimulus for larger paintings and collage work."
